Ode to My Army Belt

by Chris de Serres

At the end of all this I did not expect we would have shared this journey together.  I never meant to take you with me.  You  just sort of survived.  Many relationships.  We parachuted out of an airplane together, many times.  We almost went to war together.  We were depressed on nights like this.  We cried together.  We wondered if we would ever be happy, together.  After the Army I swore off uniforms, of any type.  Anything that indicated I was part of any organization.  I just wanted to be me for the rest of my life.  Yet I always wore you and I probably always will.
